The well renowned Irish surname of McCarthy, McCarty and Carthy derive from Carthach who was Lord of Eoghannacht in the Eleventh century and who was killed by the Lonergan's in the year 1045.
The McCarthys were known to be great Castle builders, the remains of which are spotted around Ireland. One of their most renowned castles is the Blarney Castle in Killarney, where Cormac MacCarthy lived.
